SPI Supports Purple4Life First Workshop on Sustainable Food and Feed Innovation
SPI was represented by André Almeida and Maria Carolina Esteves at the first Purple4Life Workshop, titled “Boosting the use of Purple Phototrophic Bacteria (PPB) as innovative food and feed ingredients: From metabolism to health-promoting effects” held on 19-20 March 2026 at the University of Mons (UMONS), Mons, Belgium. The event was co-organised by the Purple4Life project and the PurpleGain COST Action by UMONS, bringing together researchers, regulatory experts, industry representatives, and innovators from across Europe.
SPI’s role in the Purple4Life project encompasses communication, dissemination, and stakeholder engagement to advance the project’s efforts to reach relevant audiences across research, policy, and industry. The team’s participation in this first workshop contributed to the project’s visibility and outreach.
The two-day workshop covered the discussion of the PPB research and application. The first day addressed metabolism and production optimisation, followed by an afternoon on the regulatory landscape for PPB in food and feed markets. The second day focused on PPB as a feed ingredient in aquaculture and animal nutrition, with a closing session dedicated to its potential as a human health-promoting ingredient.
